I think I want to switch my birth control method. How do I ask my doctor about doing so?
Log how you feel—mentally and physically—while using your current birth control method.
How long you’ve been using this method? Has it had time to make an impact?
Do your research. Use our Birth Control Tool to find other methods that won’t give you the same side effects or that you’d simply feel safer on.
Express your discontent to your doctor. Let them know that this method isn’t right for you.
Ask the doctor about methods you researched or ran across somewhere. Get their insight about said methods and find out if it is right for you.
Whether you need a method that fits better in your life, doesn’t come with side effects or discomfort, and/or is more cost-efficient, communicate it with your doctor. They can help you find a solution. The decision to continue or discontinue a method should be free of coercion. If necessary, request to see another healthcare provider.
