- Abstinence can mean different things for different people, but generally it means no sexual contact of any kind, including oral, anal or vaginal sex.
- When used consistently, abstinence is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy and STI’s.
- Remember that everyone makes different decisions about their sexual health. When talking to your friend, don’t judge him/her for choices they have made or are making. Keep an open mind and be supportive.
- Explain to your friend why you are talking to him/her about abstinence, and why it is important to you.
- Ask your friend to support your decision, not try to talk you out of it.
- If your friend decides to be abstinent and has a partner, discuss ways your friend and his/her partner can enjoy their relationship without having sex.
