How do I talk to my friends about abstinence?
Abstinence can mean different things for different people, but generally it means no sexual contact of any kind, including oral, anal or vaginal sex.
When used consistently, abstinence is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy and STI’s.
Remember that everyone makes different decisions about their sexual health. When talking to your friend, don’t judge him/her for choices they have made or are making. Keep an open mind and be supportive.
Explain to your friend why you are talking to him/her about abstinence, and why it is important to you.
Ask your friend to support your decision, not try to talk you out of it.
If your friend decides to be abstinent and has a partner, discuss ways your friend and his/her partner can enjoy their relationship without having sex.
