Campus Conversations, an initiative of Talk About It Texas, is dedicated to supporting student success among older teens and young adults in higher education settings (2- and 4-year institutions) in Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, and Rio Grande Valley by providing medically- accurate sexual health education, resources, and adolescent-friendly referrals to no/low-cost clinics. We are committed to preparing and equipping young adults with the information they need to protect their futures and make well-informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.

Kelsey Atkins, Program Director

As Program Director of Higher Education, Kelsey Atkins, M.Ed., CHES (she/her), oversees the statewide Talk About It Texas Campus Conversations programs. Since joining HFTX in 2016 as a Health Educator, Kelsey has played a key role in expanding evidence-based programs for older teens at community colleges. With nearly a decade of experience in sexual and reproductive health and substance misuse prevention, she is a dedicated advocate for empowering young people to take charge of their health.

Dr. Paris Rangel, Program Manager

Dr. Paris Rangel (she/her) has been with Healthy Futures of Texas since 2020 where she started as the Program Coordinator for the Texas Foster Youth Health Initiative where she collaborated with child welfare agencies and implemented sexual and reproductive health education. In 2022, she transitioned to the Campus Conversations team as a Program Manager where she establishes manages new and existing partnerships statewide with community colleges and universities, Title X clinics, and community-based organizations. 

Kelly Shonefelt, Austin Program Coordinator

Kelly has been with the Campus Conversations in Austin since 2023. While Kelly has had many different vocational experiences in marketing, user experience design, and pastoring, she loves working on the Campus Conversations team because she gets to connect with people and build relationships with students and faculty at ACC. She wants all students to have the information they need to be healthy and to make intentional choices toward their future goals.

Kayleigh Thomas, Rio Grande Valley Health Educator II

Kayleigh (she/her) is a Health Educator II based in the Rio Grande Valley.  Kayleigh has been with the Campus Conversations program for two years and enjoys collaborating with young adults and/or college students. Kayleigh’s goal is to support by offering sexual and reproductive health education and facilitating access to any necessary information or services.

Juanita Velazquez, Rio Grande Valley Health Educator II

Juanita (she/ella) is a health educator based in the Rio Grande Valley and a member of the Campus Conversations Team. She is passionate about empowering college students with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed decisions about their sexual health and well-being.

Campus Conversations provides students with sexual and reproductive health education and resources, including:

Plan A

A 45-minute session offered virtually or in person. Students will watch a 23-minute video showcasing the lives of 3 young women and different relationship situations. They will then engage in a discussion to promote healthy reproductive health choices. 

Seventeen Days

1-hr interactive online program, most relatable for people who identify as female. Participants are presented with different scenarios involving decisions young women must make in relationships as it relates to birth control and STIs.

SHARP

A 3.5 – 4 hour single session offered in-person or virtually led by trained Health Educators. This interactive session increases knowledge within the following topics:  Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and HIV prevention and risk reduction, reproductive anatomy, contraceptive methods (including information about abstinence and Long-Acting Reversible Contraception) , healthy relationships, and goal setting.

 

Eligibility

 

To participate in any sexual health education programs, participants must be 18+. 14-17 year olds may participate with a signed, parental consent form.  

 

RGV, Dallas, and San Antonio – 18 – 24 years old; and 14-17 with parental consent

Austin – 18 – 29 years old; and 14 -17 with parental consent
